What You NEED to Know About Your Deodorant
Do you know that we’re exposed to thousands of toxins from chemicals in our personal care products? There are over 10,000 chemical ingredients in our daily beauty & personal care products. Today we will touch on the 7 toxins lurking in your deodorant.
What a Deodorant / Anti-Perspirant Does?
According to Wikipedia, a deodorant is a substance applied to the body to prevent body odor caused by the bacterial breakdown of perspiration in armpits, feet, and other areas of the body. A subgroup of deodorants – antiperspirants, affect odor as well as prevent sweating by affecting sweat glands.
What is the Danger Lurking in Our Deodorants?
By preventing sweating, deodorants / anti-perspirants simply inhibits your body’s natural secretion of toxins, clogging your skin follicles. In addition, deodorants / anti-perspirants also release harmful chemicals into our bodies without us knowing.
“When you eat something, it’s broken down by your liver & digestive system; but when you put something on your skin, there are times when it can enter your bloodstream without being metabolised.”~ Heather Patiaul, Associate Professor of Biology at North Carolina State University
Research confirmed that some compounds used in deodorants are absorbed & stored in fat cells which are prevalent in the underarm area.
“Your underarm tissue also contains hormone receptors, which could react to some of those same deodorant ingredients.”
~ Philip Harvey, Editor in Chief of the Journal of Applied Toxicology
7 Harmful Chemicals Found In Your Deodorant
When selecting a toxic-free deodorant, do be sure to read the label for the ingredients and raise a red flag when you see the below 7 harmful chemicals below:
Parabens are often used in products as a preservative. Research suggests that some parabens may interfere with the way your body produces & regulates oestrogen, disrupting hormone balance & hence may cause breast cancer.
#2: Aluminium Compounds
Aluminium is the pore-clogging ingredient in anti-perspirants to prevent sweating. Exposure to Aluminium an cause “gene instability” in breast tissue & in turn promote the growth of tumours / cancer cells.
Triclosan is often added to products (i.e. anti-acne products, deodorants / anti-perspirants & sanitising hand soaps) by cosmetic manufacturers to prevent bacterial contamination & to kill bacteria on the surface of the skin.
Triclosan is also classified as a pesticide by the FDA – when combined with water, it forms a carcinogenic gas called chloroform.
Some animal studies have linked Triclosan to unusual hormone activity & more research suggests that it can potentially affect your micro biome or the daily operations of your genes.
Phthalates help deodorant & other cosmetics with fragrances adhere / “stick” onto your skin better. They appear to disrupt androgen function – the way our bodies produce & use hormone testosterone.
Testosterone plays a role in energy & muscle maintenance. Hence Phthalates can potentially impair reproductive ability in men or impact metal development in expectant mothers. Research also link Phthalates to lower IQ levels & higher asthma rates.
#5: Artificial Colors & Fragrances
Some deodorants contain artificial colours / bleaches & fragrances that can cause serious allergic reactions.
#6: Ammonia Compounds
Ammonia Compounds such as Triethanolamine (TEA) & Diethanolamine (DEA) can penetrate into your skin & affect your liver & kidneys. These 2 chemicals are banned from products in Europe because they are known carcinogens.
Steareths are waxy solids used primarily as emulsifiers in cosmetics at concentrations of up to 25%. They can cause skin irritation predominantly around the eyes, mouth, & lips area even at low doses. Hence it is shocking that Steareths are mainly used in skincare products geared towards sensitive skin.
My Deodorant Recommendations
Once A Week Deodorant (For Trips)
I have mentioned in my previous blog post that I must pack the Once A Week Deodorant with me on overseas trips because it simply works like magic! This water-based deodorant neutralises all body odours for up to 7 days. It is fragrance-free, stain-free, non-sticky & does not cause any skin irritation.
Ingredients:Water, Propylene Glycol, Lactic Acid, Glycerol, Pottasium Sulfite, Lactobacilli Extract.
If you reside in Singapore, you can purchase it from Watsons – it’s a pack of 3 wet wipes at the price of SGD4.10.
It is not considered very cheap to maintain on a long-term basis. So I would usually purchase them for overseas trip so I can travel without the bulky deodorants.
